Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Carpal tunnel syndrome seems like nothing more than a fancy name for a pinched nerve. This particular nerve is located in the wrist. The nerve runs through a thumb-sized tunnel going from the wrist towards the palm of your hand. The fact that the nerve runs through a tunnel, called the carpal tunnel, is a good thing. The tissues that make up the tunnel give the nerve a certain amount of protection.
When A Tunnel Becomes Too Crowded
A problem can occur in this tunnel however. The nerve, called the medial nerve, doesn’t have the tunnel all to itself. It has quite a bit of company. Also, the tunnel is somewhat tightly bound by ligaments and bones. Running through the tunnel along with the medial nerve are nine tendons. These are the tendons that enable you to bend your fingers. Most of the time these tendons coexist peacefully with the nerve, and most people never experience any problems. Some do however. If one or more of the tendons put pressure on the medial nerve or pinch it, the result can be uncomfortable. For me, I personally enjoy playing the piano because of the rich and varied sounds it produces. There are also musicians who prefer wind instruments such as trumpet, saxophone and flute. However, these instruments and many other wind instruments are ideal for people who have a healthy respiratory system and powerful lung capacity. If you are suffering from any respiratory disease, it can be hard for you to produce good music out of your instrument especially if you are constantly coughing.
One of the most common respiratory diseases that affect a significant number of people around the world is bronchitis, which may be acute or chronic. Both types of bronchitis are a result of inflammation to the bronchial passages which are part of the respiratory system responsible for channeling air to the lungs. Most people confuse bronchitis vs pneumonia because both conditions cause a person to suffer from coughing spells. Acute bronchitis normally develops after a patient has suffered from a flu or cold. Its primary symptom is persistent cough which may come with clear mucus. Other associated symptoms include wheezing, fatigue, sore throat, fever, body pain, runny or stuffy nose, diarrhea and vomiting.
Chronic bronchitis is a serious and long-term condition that can affect anyone of any age group though it is more common among people 45 years old and older. Women as well as smokers are also twice more likely to develop this condition.
Aside from smoking, bacterial and viral infections are also among the primary causes of chronic bronchitis, and the condition may worsen with exposure to the same irritants that contribute to acute bronchitis.
One of the most noticeable symptoms of chronic bronchitis is persistent cough with mucus that may sometimes have streaks of blood. Coughing may worsen when exposed to smoke and other irritants. Dandruff, acne, folliculitis and scabs on scalp are just some of the conditions that affect our scalp. Although they can be caused by various factors, dry scalp is perhaps considered to be one of the common root causes of many scalp problems. In the past, I have experienced having dandruff and although it was not life-threatening, it has been an embarrassment and an irritating problem. Thankfully, I was able to get rid of dandruff after evaluating several remedies for dry scalp.
Dry scalp is normally associated with dandruff and other conditions characterized by irritation, redness, itchiness and dull scalp. There are a number of reasons why you can have dry scalp. These include eczema, extreme cold or dry weather, dietary deficiencies, too much shampooing, and use of certain hair products with strong ingredients. Addressing these problems can greatly help you avoid dry scalp and maintain a healthy scalp.
Depending on the reasons why you are having dry scalp, here are five effective dry scalp remedies you could try at home:
Shampoo less frequently.
Certain brands of shampoos can be harsh to your sensitive scalp, causing it to dry out especially if you shampoo daily. Try other brands of shampoos with milder ingredients or shampoo less frequently. For instance, if you usually shampoo your hair every day, try doing it every other day. If you already have dandruff, you could try using anti-dandruff shampoos. Additionally, avoid using blow dryers, hairsprays, gels and other hair products with alcohol content as they can worsen your problem.
Apply conditioning treatments.
A scalp that is not producing enough sebum or natural oil has the tendency to dry, making your scalp flaky, dull and itchy. The best remedy for this is to give your scalp the nourishment it needs using conditioning or hot oil treatments. You could buy these products from a drugstore or beauty supply store. Follow the instructions in the label on what to do.
Massage your scalp.
If white flakes are already noticeable on your scalp, what you need is a scalp massage. Using hot oil treatment or shampoo, gently massage your scalp for several minutes before rinsing. Doing this would not only feel good, but it can also treat your dry scalp. You could do this for at least twice a week until your condition improves.
Boost your diet with vitamin B.
Dry scalp can also be caused by vitamin B deficiency, particularly on vitamins B6 and B12. Increase your intake of whole grains, cereals and fruits and vegetables to improve this condition. You could also take vitamin B supplements including zinc and selenium.
Observe diet dos don’ts.
Some types of foods can worsen a dry scalp. Avoid sugary and spicy foods as they can trigger a dry scalp. Also cut down on alcohol consumption and instead, take in more foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Don’t forget to drink plenty of water to keep your body hydrated.
Most of the remedies listed above are inexpensive and easy to do. However, if they do not work for you, better see your doctor as there might be a more serious or underlying cause of your dry scalp problem.
Just like pain in right arm or left arm, itchy armpits are also a very common complaint among many people from all walks of life. Although I have not experienced having a serious itchy underarm problem before, I assume that the itchiness can be irresistible to scratch; otherwise, people will not scratch their armpits in public as though no one sees them. It’s gross! Since this problem affects anyone including musicians, I thought it would be good to have an in-depth look at the causes and remedies for itchy underarms.
An itching underarm is medically called pruritus. This irritating and discomforting problem can affect both men and women. The itchiness as well as other symptoms associated with it may vary depending on its underlying cause. In most cases, the itching comes with soreness, redness, swelling and even scarring. Scratching can only give temporary relief. A more permanent solution involves identifying the underlying cause and treating it.
Lack of Personal Hygiene
Even if it is constantly covered, the armpit is still exposed to grease, dirt, sweat and other body secretions that must be cleaned and washed off. For people who do not bath regularly or at least wash their armpits, bacteria can easily multiply, causing itchiness and other symptoms. There is no other remedy for lack of personal hygiene than to practice regular bathing using body wash and antiseptic soap and to ensure that your armpit is properly washed.
Candida is a common cause of various skin infections including underarm itchiness. Moist parts of the body which includes the groin and the armpits are more prone to fungal overgrowth. Aside from that, candida also thrives if a person frequently wears tight clothing or is constantly in a humid environment. In most cases, candida infection can be resolved by wearing loose clothing and using topical or oral antifungal medications such as Polyene and clotrimazole.
People who sweat excessively are also more likely to have itchy armpits. If the armpit is constantly moist and damp, it becomes a perfect environment for bacterial growth which will eventually cause irritation and itchiness. Excessive sweating is common among obese individuals, those who are on certain medications, and those who are active in physical activities. If the sweating is caused by systemic or hormonal factors, certain medications can help manage the sweating. For excessive sweating caused by other factors, the use of antiperspirant and specially formulated soap may also help.
Reaction to Deodorant and Antiperspirant
Some people experience itching in the underarm as a reaction to a particular brand of antiperspirant or deodorant they are using. Find the brand that is more suitable for you by trying out other products with milder ingredients.
This condition commonly affects obese individuals who have deep and thick skin folds where lesions can develop. There is wide range of treatment options for this condition, including the use of low-dose steroids, topical medications, phototherapy and systemic therapy among others.
Although most cases of itchy armpit will just go away on its own with home remedies, if your condition does not show any improvement for two weeks or more, see your doctor to identify the underlying cause of the itchiness and treat the problem.
Back pain is a pretty common problem that affects many people including myself. I often have back pain after sitting down for a long time without a back support or when I am doing activities that require bending. Back pain varies not only in severity but also in the area affected such as left or right side back pain, lower left back pain, upper back pain and others. Generally, the pain manifests as an ache, stiffness or tension in the back which can range from mild to severe.
Most cases of back pain are just ordinary pain triggered by bad posture such as when bending, lifting object, standing or even sitting in the wrong and awkward position. Although not serious, the pain may cause too much discomfort especially when sleeping or doing ordinary routines. Fortunately, you don’t have to go to the doctor to alleviate your condition since the pain normally goes away on its own after several days. Home remedies can also help for faster relief.
Below are some of the remedies for ordinary back pain which can help in your fast recovery. I can attest to the effectivity of some of these remedies as I have already tried them before.
1. Over-the-counter medications
If the pain becomes irritating and uncomfortable, you could try over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen. However, if you are pregnant, painkillers may not be the best option for you. Additionally, don’t take more than 4 grams of pain reliever in one day as it could injure your liver.
2. Heat therapy or cold therapy
Heat therapy is especially effective for back spasms. It can be done by bathing in a hot tub or by using a heat wrap that can stay warm for at least four hours. If it does not work for you, try the opposite of heat therapy, which is using an ice pack on the affected area. Cold therapy works better for me.
For people suffering from a long period of back pain, massage can be beneficial for reducing the pain. You could request somebody to massage the affected area using a massage oil containing menthol for more comfort.
Resting does not necessarily mean simply lying or sitting down doing nothing. Resting means that you have to stop doing strenuous activities that can worsen your condition such as bending, pushing or lifting heavy objects. While resting, you could also do some exercises to strengthen your back. You could ask or research online of the types of exercises suitable for people with back pain.
5. Observe proper posture
To prevent your condition from worsening, observe proper posture whenever you lie, stand, sit or lift. Also avoid putting too much pressure on your back whenever you have to do your daily routine.
While these home remedies can help you deal with the pain, you should seek medical attention if your condition does not show any signs of improvement, when pain is already unbearable, or when you experience other symptoms such as weight loss, swelling, fever of more than 100 degrees Fahrenheit, difficulty in urination or worsening pain at night, among others.
Do you know that playing certain musical instruments can sometimes cause shoulder pain? In fact, I know of some guitarists and violinists who have suffered from shoulder pain after hours of continuously playing. But other people also suffer from shoulder pain for various reasons. For instance, football players, boxers and other athletes experience shoulder pain as a symptom of shoulder subluxation because of a hard blow on their shoulders, while ordinary people can suffer from shoulder pain due to poor posture. Regardless of the cause, however, shoulder pain including pain between shoulder blades is not something that you could easily neglect. The longer you delay to address the pain, the more it can linger and aggravate.
The key to treating shoulder pain is addressing its cause:
Poor Posture – Many people are not concerned about their posture when sitting down or doing their regular routine. However, poor posture is one of the most common causes of shoulder pain. In particular, sitting down for a long period of time with the wrong posture can lead to muscle imbalances, causing some of the back muscles to work harder. This in turn can have an effect on some parts of your back, particularly the shoulder area. This is very common among office employees who are used to sitting down for several hours straight with poor posture and without stretching activities in between.
Strenuous Exercise or Activity – Engaging in a new and strenuous activity or an exercise involving twisting the trunk or spine such as when lifting heavy objects, doing heavy manual labor, or playing tennis or golf can put strain in the back muscles. This in turn can cause pain in the shoulder blades.
Cervical Spine Problems – A more serious cause of shoulder pain is cervical spine problem. People who experience accidents that affect the cervical spine may suffer from pain as a consequential effect. This pain may linger until the problem with the cervical spine is solved.
Visceral Pain – There are times when shoulder pain can also be caused by problems in other organs of the body such as the gall bladder, stomach, liver, lungs, spleen or pericardial sac. This is more often referred to as referred pain. In this case, a doctor must be consulted for proper diagnosis of the real cause of shoulder pain.
Incoming Heart Attack – Aside from chest pain, another notable symptom of an incoming heart attack is pain around the shoulder blades, which comes with sweating, nausea and pain in the left arm. If these symptoms are observed, immediate medical attention is needed.
Some of the causes of shoulder pain are easy to address by your own, while other causes such as visceral pain and possible heart attack need intervention from your health care provider or doctor. It is important that you or your doctor is able to identify and treat the real or underlying cause of your shoulder pain rather than just addressing the pain itself. Don’t let the pain linger. Address it as soon as possible.
Before buying or owning a musical instrument, there are some important details that you should know about to help you choose your instrument, to maintain it and on how to use it properly. The same is true with owning a pet, more particularly dogs. Many music enthusiasts who come to me to learn playing the piano or other musical instruments are dog owners. Sometimes, they will share stories about their challenges of having a dog. Perhaps one of the most common challenges they encounter is choosing the right food for their pet.
Factors to consider when choosing dog food
When deciding on what type of food is suitable for your dog, consider its age, gender, body composition and activity level. In general, dogs need the a balanced diet composed of the six nutrient groups which include fats, oils, vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates and water. Some good quality commercial dog food should be able to have this nutritional balance.
Food options available for dogs:
Kibble (dry food) – It is considered to be the most economical and convenient as it does not need refrigeration. It is normally classified into ordinary and hypoallergenic dog food.
Canned (wet food) – It has the advantage of long shelf life and is easy to find in many supermarkets. It can be expensive though.
Semi-moist – This kind of dog food is normally shaped into burgers, pork chops and other meaty products. It is generally high in sugar and is known to cause dental disease in the long run. Additionally, many brands contain preservatives and artificial coloring which are not good for dogs. It contains less nutritional value but they are best as occasional treat.
Home cooked – Although time-consuming to prepare, one of the advantages of a home-cooked diet is you know what you put in it. Of course, that is if you know what type of ingredients should be added in your dog’s food.
Raw – Normally, this kind of diet includes raw meat, including bones and organs. This type of food is okay for many dogs as they generally have strong stomach acids to digest it.
Economy versus premium commercial dog food brands
Just like in most commercial products, you get what you pay for when buying dog foods. Most economy brands are made from cheap ingredients and contain less nutritional value. They generally contain filler ingredients which can be harmful to your dog. On the other hand, premium brands generally use high quality ingredients, with higher nutritional value and with less filler. You will know this by reading the label before purchasing.
Dry food versus wet food
Both types of food have advantages and drawbacks. Dry foods are easier to store and serve and they are also normally more affordable than wet foods. Dry foods also help reduce tartar buildup when chewing. However, if your dog needs more water intake, this type of food may not be as beneficial as wet foods.
Mixing dry food with wet food
Generally, it is okay to mix dry and wet foods to feed your dog unless your dog is on a special diet requiring a specific type of food. For instance, dogs on a dental diet need to be on dry food while dogs on urinary diet should take wet foods with high water content.
These facts are intended to be used as guidelines only. If you often ask yourself, can dogs eat bananas and other fruits? Maybe yes, or may be not depending on the condition of your dog. It is safer to ask your veterinarian for advice on the best food for your dog.
Acne is one of the most common skin problems that affect people, regardless of gender. While I was still teaching piano, some of my students who were just in their teens already had acne. I used to think that it only affected older people. Acne may not be as serious as cancer or heart problems, but people should really put much attention to it especially since the affected area is highly visible like the face. Acne is a troublesome skin problem because it can cause a noticeable blemish on the skin aside from the fact that it can be painful especially for the nodular acne.
While there are creams that claim to be effective in acne removal, some cases go out of hand, such that a more aggressive treatment would be necessary. One treatment I know of is the salicylic acid peel. But many people may not be familiar about this form of treatment.
Salicylic acid peels are categorized under beta hydroxyl peel which is considered to be stronger and more penetrating peels. This form of acne treatment is suitable for most types of skin but it is said to be more effective in people with oily skin. It can also treat a wide range of skin problems including clogged pores, blackheads, acne and congested skin. However, if you have aspirin allergy, this treatment is not suitable for you.
Most salicylic acid peels are just 15 percent in strength. And before it is applied, a primer should first be applied on the skin to remove any residual oil. When the prep solution dries, it is followed by the application of salicylic acid. The peel will remain on the skin for a preset time before it will be gently removed with water or cleanser. The peel normally feels prickly and warm on the skin. Sometimes, it may even cause redness and discomfort. It is important to remove the peel even before the preset time is finished if you can no longer tolerate the pain.
After the peel is removed, post-peel redness may still linger for several hours or days for some people. You may also notice your skin to become flaky and dry. Some light peeling may also occur. But unlike other acne treatments such as laser treatment and TCA peels, the use of salicylic acid has no significant downtime. The skin normally heals and returns to normal after three days. Also, it has no major side effects except for flaking and redness. But this is important to keep in mind to avoid direct exposure to sunlight especially during the first two days after undergoing the peel, since the skin is more sensitive to the sun during these days.
The acid peel using salicylic acid may have varying effects on different people. Some people will take more than 6 peels before they would see results while others need less. But generally, if the acne is moderate to severe, it will take 5-6 peels to see results.
I have not personally undergone any type of acid peel for acne problem. But based on what I heard from friends, it is one of the effective remedies for acne.
Pregnancy and stretch marks have nothing to do with playing the piano but they are something that concerns a lot of women including me. I have known of many mothers who were not as confident with their bodies compared to before they got pregnant. And it was all because of stretch marks.
Based on what I read online, stretch marks on breasts, belly and other parts of the body as a result of pregnancy can be treated. And I would like to share this information to other women who may not have experienced this problem yet.
Stretch marks are pink or purplish narrow streak-like lines that you could see on the surface of the skin. They normally appear in the tummy, thighs and breasts as the pregnancy progresses. Normally, they are preceded by itchiness around the affected area. While stretch marks are normally associated with pregnancy, they could also affect other non-pregnant women and even men. They normally appear whenever there is stretching of the skin as a result of a growth spurge or weight loss. But pregnant women are more prone to stretch marks because of the hormonal changes they experience apart from the growing size of their belly and weight gain.
The human skin is composed of three layers namely, the epidermis, the dermis and the subcutis, which are the outer layer, middle layer and inner layer respectively. Stretch marks develop in the middle layer after sudden stretching of the skin over a short period of time like during pregnancy. This stretching causes the dermis to break, forming the marks.
Eighty percent of pregnant women are likely to be affected by stretch marks. The risk factors include your skin type as well as how you care for your skin during pregnancy. It is important to note that while the marks will gradually fade after childbirth, they will not completely go away even after treatment. That is why prevention is always the best when it comes to stretch marks.
You are likely to develop stretch marks if you are gaining in weight more than you should. Your doctor should be able to advice you about your ideal weight during certain stages in pregnancy. You can achieve this by observing a balanced diet.
During pregnancy, it is also important to moisturize your skin since dry skin is more prone to stretch marks. There are moisturizing lotions which are specially formulated for the needs of pregnant women. Also, keep yourself hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
A review of two studies looking at two specific creams marketed to prevent stretch marks found that massaging the skin may possibly help to prevent stretch marks in pregnancy. Some women can also attest that massaging their skin with a lotion or cream helps them prevent stretch marks. Massaging helps improve blood circulation which in turn encourages the growth of healthy skin tissues.
However, some women, despite doing preventive measures may still develop stretch marks, but only to a lesser degree than those women who did nothing about them. If you have stretch marks and are curious on how to remove them, there are moisturizing lotions and creams that can help make the marks less noticeable though not be totally eliminated.

They say that music soothes a stressed and worried soul. I can attest that this is true based on my experience. Whenever I play the piano or hear my students playing the piano, it relaxes me. Because of this, listening to music or playing instruments can in one way or another help people prevent certain diseases which may be caused by stress or worries. One of these predicaments is kidney stones.
Yes, stress is just one of the risk factors for developing kidney stones. Kidney stones are a common condition affecting the urinary tract. Although they are not life-threatening, it is something you would not want to have. What do kidney stones feel like? They can cause severe pain when you are passing urine. But there are ways to prevent this problem. One of them is being aware of its risk factors involved, especially those that you are in control of.
Risk factors within your control:
Inadequate fluid intake: How much fluid do you take particularly water can help you prevent or be at risk of kidney stones. If you are not drinking enough water of at least eight glasses a day, your urine can become very concentrated, allowing the formation of stones.
Diet: Consuming foods that are high in sodium, oxalate and protein makes a person at high risk of kidney stones.
Weight Gain and Obesity: Although there is no conclusive evidence yet, some researchers associate obesity, weight gain or a large waist circumference to urine composition and insulin resistance. It causes the body to excrete more uric acid and calcium, which could alter on form into kidney stones.
Medicine: Certain medications such as indinavir and acetazolamide also cause kidney stones.
Stress: People who have a stressful life are also more likely to develop kidney stones. Researchers associate it with vasopressin which is released by the body when a person is stressed. This hormone increases the urine concentration which could lead to the development of stones.
Risk Factors Beyond Your Control
Age: Kidney stones are more common among men who are in their 40s and above and women in their 50s and above. However, for younger women, it is common during the last stages of pregnancy.
Family history: If any of your parents as well as sibling have kidney stones, you are also more likely to have them. This is also true among families with a history of gout.
Ethnicity: Based on reported cases of kidney stones, Caucasians have the highest incidence, followed by Mexican Americans and then African-Americans.
Geographical location: The local water as well as the common diet of the people in your geographical area may also contribute to your risk of developing kidney stones. In the US, the lowest occurrence is reported among people in the west and the highest occurrence is reported in the southern region.
Medical condition: Patients with gout are at risk of uric acid stones. People who have a medical condition that causes them to be bedridden are more prone to developing calcium stones.

Summer is the time when some kids take a break from school and enroll in various summer classes including music class. In fact, I teach piano lessons to a number of kids during summer than any other time of the year. But I also encourage my students to spend some time enjoying outdoor activities such as swimming. But I always caution them to take care of their skin to avoid sunburns. I know how painful it can be especially for young children to have sunburns. Most of us who already have experienced getting sunburns at some point know this.
Summer time is that time when the heat of the sun is more intense, causing you to easily get sunburns. The sun can burn your skin anywhere you are outdoors when you are directly exposed to it. You can have it when you are in the beach, playing in your yard, or just walking down the streets. There are different degrees of sunburns but the second degree sunburn and the third degree sunburn are more serious and may cause discomfort and pain and can even lead to serious complications if not treated.
Although applying creams and lotions with sun protection factor can help prevent sunburn, sometimes we are not too mindful about their proper application such that we will still develop skin burns from the sun. If you start to feel a burning sensation in your skin, get out of the sun immediately and take home remedies for sunburn.
Water – cool the skin by taking a cool shower or cold bath. After bathing, gently dry the skin with a soft towel. Avoid scrubbing or rubbing the skin. Also, drink plenty of water to replace the water you have lost through sweating.
Cold compress – if your sunburn is just mild, a cold compress (not ice cold) composed of equal parts water and milk can also help. Soak a clean cloth in a solution and then gently wipe the cloth in the sunburned area. Do this for up to 15 minutes every two hours.
