5 Effective Dry Scalp Remedies

Dandruff, acne, folliculitis and scabs on scalp are just some of the conditions that affect our scalp. Although they can be caused by various factors, dry scalp is perhaps considered to be one of the common root causes of many scalp problems. In the past, I have experienced having dandruff and although it was not life-threatening, it has been an embarrassment and an irritating problem. Thankfully, I was able to get rid of dandruff after evaluating several remedies for dry scalp.

Dry scalp is normally associated with dandruff and other conditions characterized by irritation, redness, itchiness and dull scalp. There are a number of reasons why you can have dry scalp. These include eczema, extreme cold or dry weather, dietary deficiencies, too much shampooing, and use of certain hair products with strong ingredients. Addressing these problems can greatly help you avoid dry scalp and maintain a healthy scalp.

Depending on the reasons why you are having dry scalp, here are five effective dry scalp remedies you could try at home:

  1. Shampoo less frequently.

Certain brands of shampoos can be harsh to your sensitive scalp, causing it to dry out especially if you shampoo daily. Try other brands of shampoos with milder ingredients or shampoo less frequently. For instance, if you usually shampoo your hair every day, try doing it every other day. If you already have dandruff, you could try using anti-dandruff shampoos. Additionally, avoid using blow dryers, hairsprays, gels and other hair products with alcohol content as they can worsen your problem.

  1. Apply conditioning treatments.

A scalp that is not producing enough sebum or natural oil has the tendency to dry, making your scalp flaky, dull and itchy. The best remedy for this is to give your scalp the nourishment it needs using conditioning or hot oil treatments. You could buy these products from a drugstore or beauty supply store. Follow the instructions in the label on what to do.

  1. Massage your scalp.

If white flakes are already noticeable on your scalp, what you need is a scalp massage. Using hot oil treatment or shampoo, gently massage your scalp for several minutes before rinsing. Doing this would not only feel good, but it can also treat your dry scalp. You could do this for at least twice a week until your condition improves.

  1. Boost your diet with vitamin B.

Dry scalp can also be caused by vitamin B deficiency, particularly on vitamins B6 and B12. Increase your intake of whole grains, cereals and fruits and vegetables to improve this condition. You could also take vitamin B supplements including zinc and selenium.

  1. Observe diet dos don’ts.

Some types of foods can worsen a dry scalp. Avoid sugary and spicy foods as they can trigger a dry scalp. Also cut down on alcohol consumption and instead, take in more foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Don’t forget to drink plenty of water to keep your body hydrated.

Most of the remedies listed above are inexpensive and easy to do. However, if they do not work for you, better see your doctor as there might be a more serious or underlying cause of your dry scalp problem.
